What happens during the Menopause?
The menopause can be divided into three sections.
The Perimenpause usually occurs between 45 and 55 years.
During this time the oestrogen levels are fluctuating. Sometimes they are very high and they can then fall dramatically. This swinging pattern can cause the disruptive symptoms such as hot flushes, irritability, anxiety, brain fog, headache, joint aches and sleep disturbance. There is often irregularity of bleeding with very heavy bleeds and irregular patterns.
Menopause
This marks the last menstrual period and the average for this is 51. It can only be marked retrospectively ie when a woman’s last period was 1 yr ago.
Post Menopause
Is everything after the last period and symptoms are due to declining oestrogen levels. These include many of the symptoms listed above and also vaginal dryness, skin changes low libido and weight gain.
There may be other physical changes including higher blood pressure, changes in cholesterol levels (increasing risk of heart disease), and losing calcium from your bones (raising the risk of osteoporosis) The range of symptoms and how severe they are and how long they last is different for each woman.
